For some time I have been daydreaming about staging a large wargame. I umpired a 1/32nd Waterloo game down in deepest Devon a few years back and I fancied something similar but with 1/72nd figures and a Second World War theme. I wanted a big table and lots of tanks so The Battle of Kursk seemed the natural choice. Now, this comes with some issues! Like all WW2 'battles' it is vast - they aren't really battles at all but campaigns so I have had to break it down a bit in order to give the players the sense that they are commanding a large formation in the second world war and give the essence of warfare in that period without getting bogged down in detail. So I want it to be grim but fun!
This has entailed the construction and painting of a vast amount of figures and I have used some of them to test the intended rules (Rapid Fire). I got a bit lost as to what I had and what I need so have conducted an inventory. This is the Soviet 5 Guards Tank Army and friends:
For scale purposes - these are 1/72nd figures and vehicles laid out on an 8 foot by 5 foot table so currently no room for the Germans!
Fantastic Phil! Or is that plastastic? It will be beaut to see this coming together and then the actual thing. A real challenge at 1/72 to scale it appropriately so that you don't have the figures and vehicle in the game arrayed like they are for this parade 😀
ReplyDeleteI still recall your fantastic 1/32 Waterloo for the bicentenary. Such a wonderful spectacle. In fact, I go back to it from time to time.
All the very best, James
Germans next - all that spotty camo will be a pain and yes I will need a big table to deploy that lot! In the meantime, more Napoleonics and some experimental stuff.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant Phil. I look forward to seeing all of those! :)
DeleteBest wishes, James
[I did some dot and splinter camouflage on some 1/32 German inf./SS/fallschirmjager a few years back. It was easier than I expected and looked okay. Yours will be heaps better though, I warrant.]
p.s. I have sent an email to the address that I have for you. If it's not current, could you drop me a line please with your address (mine's in my profile, if you have lost it)? Cheers, James
